Dahlia Capybara left the Lantern Room at 2:17 a.m. on Tuesday carrying a cream hatbox large enough to generate several theories and exactly no useful answers.

The singer, occasional fragrance model and reliably late dinner guest had spent roughly three hours inside the private basement club, where the evening’s reservation list reportedly included a lobster choreographer, two retired greyhound models and the ceramicist Moss Vole. The Lantern Room does not confirm its guests. Its side door, regrettably for them, remains visible from the pavement.

Dahlia emerged alone.

She was wearing an ivory satin evening coat cut almost to the ankle, narrow black gloves and a chartreuse lacquered wig arranged into two immaculate finger waves around her small rounded ears. Her make-up was unusually severe: graphite shadow extending beyond the outer corners of the eyes, bleached brows and a thin line of silver pigment across the lower lip. A pear-shaped smoky quartz hung from one ear.

Then there was the box.

It was circular, cream-coloured and tied shut with flat black cord. No branding was visible. Dahlia carried it carefully under one arm while using the other to hold her coat away from the wet pavement. She did not appear especially interested in the small group waiting outside.

Asked whether the box contained part of an upcoming stage look, Dahlia stopped beside the car and looked down at it for several seconds.

“Everyone has become extremely interested in storage,” she said.

She then got into a dark green town car. The hatbox was placed beside her rather than in the boot.

The detail has attracted attention partly because Dahlia has been largely absent from public events since her seven-night residency at the Glass Eel ended in June. At the final performance, she removed an elaborate copper wig during the encore and left it onstage under a single lamp. It was subsequently described by her stylist, Gino Gerbil, as “the conclusion of a silhouette”. Nobody explained this either.

Her representative confirmed to WILD CREATURE that Dahlia had attended “a private supper among friends” on Monday night. Asked specifically about the contents of the hatbox, the representative replied: “I have nothing sensible to add.”

There is, at present, no evidence that the box contains anything more exciting than a hat.

That possibility has done little to calm the situation.
